Truxton Extreme

Truxton Extreme is not only an outstanding shmup, but it also sets a new benchmark for how to bring back cult series of the genre into the current age. Very high marks on graphical effects, sound design, and soundtrack along with spot-on gameplay makes it easy to recommend adding this one to your Switch 2 library as soon as possible. Both veteran shmup players and newcomers alike will find much to enjoy in this package.You also get an outstanding digital graphic novel to go along with your game. Toaplan's legacy is in the good hands of Masahiro Yuge, and if this is the shape of things to come, I couldn't be more excited for future Tatsujin projects.

Truxton Extreme is a vertical shooter in the classic mode, in that you've got a powerful ship, three lives, lots of enemies, and endless ways to die.

The graphics and music are pumped up to the max, and the gameplay respects the original and improves upon it, with a few very welcome improvements. The ticket price may be a little steep, but in my opinion, it's well worth the trip in a spaceship!

Throw in some excellent visuals and a fantastic synth-infused soundtrack, and Truxton Extreme easily ranks among the most interesting bullet hell shooters I’ve played in recent memory. It’s a must for fans of the genre, and you certainly don’t need any prior experience with its predecessors to enjoy it. To be fair, you don’t even need to know they existed. I sure didn’t.

Truxton Extreme modernizes the classic vertical-scrolling shooter with EX BOOST, permanent Story mode upgrades, and demanding stages that make learning from your mistakes part of the fun. The repeated character paths and limited easier options hold it back somewhat, but shoot ’em up fans who enjoy learning enemy placement and improving through repetition should find a lot to like.

Toaplan’s classic spaceship shooter makes a triumphant return with an excellent version that updates every aspect while preserving the classic gameplay. Truxton Extreme marks the return of a legendary series in the best possible way. I’d be lying if I said I found it accessible, since it’s one of the hardest games I’ve played in recent years, but at the same time, I’m glad that Tatsujin kept the essence intact. Easy games come out every day, but true challenges are few and far between.

Truxton Extreme is every arcade-goer's dream—though it is certainly not for the faint of heart. Its high-speed, precision-based gameplay, outstanding soundtrack, and challenging stages make it a worthy successor, while its unlockable modes, model gallery, and animated manga really help complete the package. It is a memorable experience to say the least, but players should be fully aware of what they are getting into before taking the plunge.

Truxton Extreme is a celebration of all things I love about Truxton. From Masahiro Yuge’s involvement on the game’s incredible soundtrack to its modern spin on shmups, there’s much to love…assuming you’re up for a good ol’ fashioned shmup challenge.

Truxton Extreme is about as good as a return for this series could be.

It may not be a casual-friendly game, but it sure is a hardcore-friendly game. Truxton Extreme certainly lives up to its name, as it’s a bullet hell game that will push you to your limits and reward you when you succeed.
