Low-Budget Repairs

After being completely underprepared for just what was waiting for me in Low Budget Repairs, this game easily establishes itself as a silly but fun simulation game. I’ve got to give Low Budget Repairs the Thumb Culture Gold Award. Aside from a couple of frustrating moments with controls, which, again, I think might be intentional, this game was super enjoyable. I’m very please to have picked this game up after having it on my wishlist for a while. Super excited to see what comes next from this dev!

If you want to have a good laugh at the dialogue and play the part of a hopeless repairman, this game is perfect for you. But you'll need to keep in mind the game’s low-budget production, which may get on your nerves over time.

Low-Budget Repairs is a highly entertaining game offering hours of gameplay, where players can tackle a wide variety of jobs—the kind they generally wouldn't do in real life. The music is engaging and evokes the game's setting, helping players maintain their rhythm (especially during repairs). Despite the great visuals, there are some issues—such as the camera, which lacks a free-look mode while using tools; this might leave some players feeling a bit dizzy, though it doesn't detract significantly from the overall experience. If you enjoy simulators, this game feels like a collection of them rolled into one, allowing you to perform a diverse range of repairs while offering a healthy dose of humor.

As a veteran of all kinds of simulation games, I had pretty high hopes for Low-Budget Repairs, especially since the trailer got me really excited about the game. And here I have to warn you right away not to let the promotional materials fool you too easily. They showed off a lot of features and elements that ultimately never made it into the actual game. Setting that aside, however, and judging solely the product we actually received, I find it hard to say much good about it beyond the fact that it’s fun, atmospheric, and undoubtedly had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, as it stands, it’s a heavily underdeveloped game, full of bugs and problematic design choices. The terrible controls, the near-total lack of precision when performing tasks, and several clearly ill-conceived design decisions effectively take away the enjoyment of the gameplay.

Low-Budget Repairs, much like its central themes, is a rather askew, awkward, and lopsided affair. When it's at its best, it's a humorous slant on the House Flipper formula. But, at its worst, it's a broken, janky, and underdeveloped mess. Yet, despite its flaws, I still find myself glad to have endured this quirky handyman experience. Mileage may vary, but it's worth a try, provided you're not a perfectionist.

My gripes aside, I can honestly say that Low-Budget Repairs is one of my favorite new renovation games, if not my downright favorite. It does many mechanics in the genre well while also adding a real, comically dingy and cheap feeling to everything, entertaining beyond the satisfying process by allowing you to be a garbage handyman and accompanying the experience with great dialogue and characters. While I think the game could be a bit more open and make more frequent use of its immersive mechanics, it was still an overall fun game and one I think fans of the genre will really enjoy.
